new message/discussion board

Since it sounds like some of the discussion board traffic is going to ifish regarding boat issues, I have posted an ifish boat and motor tech link as well as the Dory Page message board link. Use whichever discussion board works best for you, or both!

Commercial Salmon Trolling Forum

I found this commercial salmon fishing forum while browsing around the other day. Some quality topics and posts. Most of it seems to be Alaska based, but there's representation elsewhere along the west coast, too. Check it out.

New Front Page Look

It's been a long time since the Dory Page had a face lift. Using Google Picasa tools, the website has a new look. More tweaking may take place as I have time for it.

Dory Videos

I added a Dory Videos page today. With posting video online being quite easy these days, I added this new page to showcase dories in action all around the world. How fun this would have been when I commercial fished in our dory. If you have a dory video to submit, please email me with the URL and I'll post it on this page. Enjoy!

Cole Ortega Donation Fund

This is a message posted on the PC Dorymen's Assn. website:

"A Special Message from the Association's Co-Chairs"

On July 6th, a young surfer and a dory boat collided in high surf. Neither could see each other in the extreme conditions that developed rapidly that day. The surfer suffered multiple injuries including the severing of his arm near the elbow. Due to the clear thinking and quick actions of bystanders, Cole Ortega was transported and his arm was reattached. Hopes are high for a full recovery.

Although the investigation found no fault in the collision, it has devastated both families and stunned our community.

Our hearts go out to Cole and his family. We know that Cole is in for a long period of recovery and rehabilitation. There will be expenses that are not covered by insurance.

In a cooperative effort by the surfing community and the Dorymen's Association, a fund has been established to receive donations for Cole and his family. Please give generously to help this 14 yr old boy in his recovery.

Donations can be made to:

North Carolina Dory Fishing

I ran across this article and thought it might be of interest to those on the west coast, especially those from Pacific City, OR and Newport Beach, CA. It's about seine netting mullet off the beach of North Carolina and how dories are used in the process. Check it out-

Depoe Bay, Oregon Cam

Below is a link for a Depoe Bay, Oregon Cam. For those not familar with Depoe Bay, it is the world's smallest harbor and is located on the Central Oregon Coast. The entrance is just a small channel through the rocks right out to the open sea. The cam shows the entrance.

Check out the ClustrMap!

I recently came across a free tool called ClustrMap. It provides a graphical display on a world map of the hits a website receives. I installed it a few days ago and now it's working. Interestingly, there are visits from California, the Midwest, East Coast, Northern Europe, and Australia. It be fun to watch as more visits accumulate. You can access it here or go to the Dory Page main page and click on the ClustrMap logo.

A Dory's Story

Whether you're from Cape Cod, Eureka, Newport, PC, or Alaska, all of those who have dory fished for a number of years have seen many dories come and go. Some stay the same, but many either vanish, or become transformed as they move from owner to owner. Browsing around Sandy W's pics the other day, I came across recent pics of our former dory. Shown below is the transformation our boat has experienced in its lifespan.

The Carolyn Kay in 1978. Equipped with a 70 hp Evinrude, handcranks, an old Morrow Loran, cb, compass and depth finder. It was built in 1973 and was formerly known as Pisces. The people who first owned it used only a compass for navigation. They lowered their deep trolling lines down to figure the depth. Note the "phone booth" console which kept us semi-dry in oncoming choppy seas. I have no pictures of the Pisces.

Same boat name, same owners, but the year is 1988 and the boat is equipped with hydraulic gurdies, LORAN plotter, fathometer ,CB and some other cosmetic and structural changes.

Fast Forward to the mid-90's the boat. The Carolyn Kay was sold, became the Accomplice, and fished out of PC. It's hard to see, but the console was rebuilt without the "phone booth."

Moving ahead to the 2000's, the dory is now known as the Sand Dollar with orange trim. It's still looking good and fishes out of PC.

Upcoming Dory Page Web Address Change

Coming later this month, I will be switching to a new Internet provider. Therefore, the Dory Page will be moving to the webspace of the new provider as well. If you visit the site and find the address is no longer working, visit this blog site. It will remain functioning during the move to the new address, and I will provide any necessary updates regarding the move to the new provide. In addition, the Dory Message board will remain functioning. You might want to bookmark these two Dory Page links. Please share this info with anyone you know who frequents this website. Thanks for your understanding. In the meantime I will work on a few new photo pages and will work on avoiding any downtime for the site.
